NO to More Harmful Fossil Fuels & Gas Stations in Our Community!
Communities around the world (like ours) are organizing to get their elected officials to think out of the “big box” and to pass policies and that stop fossil fuel companies from continuing to put their profits over community health, justice, and future.
Already a handful of communities across the US are deploying local land use powers to pass policies that reduce fuel explosion, spill, and pollution risks. As they’re keeping their communities safe, they’re also tackling the climate crisis by keeping fossil fuels in the ground. And now is the time to grow this movement into an international force to be reckoned with – one that changes the market for oil and gas and flips the power dynamic. It’s time to put the oil and gas industry on the defensive and for communities to play offense.
These policies can include opposing new fossil fuel infrastructure, affirming a commitment to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, committing to energy efficiency, committing to a future of electrification and renewable energy, and/or developing financial strategies to ensure that no one’s left behind.
As a first step, local governments can pass resolutions that describe their policies to help them reach their climate action goals. As a second step, they can protect our community from dangerous fossil fuel projects by restricting the development of new fuel stations and mega gas stations that do so much damage to our environment, health, and climate.
